Why the QWERTY keyboard really isn't the best.
Why do we use the QWERTY keyboard? Your natural response is, "It makes typing quicker." Actually, it's quite the opposite; it makes typing slower. That's because the QWERTY keyboard was designed back when there were no computers, just typewriters. So, when the QWERTY keyboard was made, all the commonly typed key combinations were positioned far apart from one another so that the typewriter wouldn't jam. When the first computers with keyboards came out, the QWERTY keyboard was the only one in use. But in computers, keys can't jam, so the commonly used keys being spread far apart just makes typing slower! And for the 40 years that computers with keyboards have been around, no changes have been made, although a professor studied the most commonly typed combinations and came out with the DVORAK keyboard. Unfortunately, little attention was given to it and it was never put into use, although it was proved to be significantly more efficient that the QWERTY layout.
