Wagons: What happened?

If you've lived long enough to see the days back when the streets were crowded with wagons, you're probably thinking the same thing as I am: what happened? If you keep your eye out nowadays, you'll see barely any wagons. Well, here are my theories on what happened.

1. Pickup Trucks hit the market
Back when all of the wagons were there, the only pickups you saw around were for contractors. But now, pickups for everyday use all over the place. Also, they're a lot cheaper and give much more trunk space than a wagon. Wagons cost just a couple thousand dollars under the amount of a five-seat pickup... that has much more trunk space.

2. People don't really need trunk space anymore
Personally, I rarely have problems with not enough trunk space... I have a sedan. But next time you're on the road, notice how barely anybody puts anything in their trunk.

Some people think that wagons cost a lot for what they are. Not really! Take a look at the prices of some best-selling wagons:

Subaru Outback: $23,920
Volkswagen Jetta: $21,695
Hyundai Elantra: $17,915
Toyota Matrix: $18,270

Not too bad, is it? Personally, I like wagons. Though pickup trucks have wiped them out pretty well, pickups don't appeal to everyone. And, a lot of people think like this: "If I don't need extra trunk space, why pay for a wagon?" Good question.
