iFixit tears down the new iPad

You could stand in line, waiting for the new iPad to come out at 8AM tomorrow. Or, you could use a little time zone trickery by flying down to Australia, being the first in line for the new iPad, and tearing it apart. And iFixit did exactly the ladder. Picture of iPad 3 Part With "A5X" Processor Shows Itself

Lately, there have been a lot of photoshopped pictures of iPad 3 parts circulating around the web. So when we hear about a picture of an iPad 3 with an "A5X" processor, "Photoshop" is pretty much the first word that pops into our minds. Yet, look at the picture. It's so clear, and the reflection of the light on the bubble wrap looks perfect. The date code's number, 1146, means it was produced in the 46th week of 2011, corresponding to November 16-20. This is approximately when construction on the iPad 3 began. And yes, the processor's name is A5X.

This picture showed up yesterday on the Chinese site Weiphone. It appears to be the processor and part of the memory unit of the upcoming iPad 3. Currently, the iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and 5th generation iPod Touch all sport A5 processors. So, it was expected that the iPad 3 would see an A6 processor. But this picture suggests that the change in processor speed would be more minor, just as an iPhone 4S would be a more minor change than an iPhone 5.

But what could this tell us about the iPad 3? Well, if the changes in the processor are minor, it could be that it becomes quad-core, but the GHz stay the same. Or maybe the GHz goes up from 1 to 1.5, but it stays dual-core. Either way, if this picture is in fact correct, this certainly changes our predictions about the iPad 3. Sure, you could just wait 16 days for the media event, but waiting is hard when it's for something like an iPad...

LG Optimus Vu: Wide Display, Wowing Specs

Sure, Mobile World Congress is starting up in just one week, but some companies don't have that kind of patience when they make a breakthrough product. That's exactly what happened with LG. Inspired by the Samsung Galaxy Note, they hoped that people would catch on to the new trend, but put their own twist on the super-sized smartphone by making a 4:3 aspect ratio.

The picture above that LG released tells us a lot about the phone. First, the display is quite unique. Not only does it have a 4:3 aspect ratio (bad for movies, but maybe better for web), it has a super-sharp 1024x768 5" IPS LCD display.

Rumor has it that the thing also has mind-blowing specs; a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, an 8 MP rear-facing camera, 4G LTE, and Android 2.3 all packed in a 8.5 mm thin case. Luckily, LG says the device will be updated with Ice Cream Sandwich around late-May. If you like its look, check out a photo gallery.

Samsung plans to release phones with a 2GHz dual-core processor!

How would you like it to have a phone that responds to your commands almost instantly, and runs huge programs without a problem? And what if that phone had a dual-core 2GHz processor? Well, by next year, Smasung will make this phone a reality! The Maeli Business Newspaper reports a Samsung official has said that they are planning on offering a dual-core Android smartphone with a 2GHz processor. 2GHz on each core! Samsung also will sell these chips seperately to make any device rocket-fast.

Intel Oak Trail Atom Z670 tablets to be released March 30, to feature 1.5 GHz processor

After 9 months spent improving the battery and performance of the Oak Trail Atom Z670 tablets, Intel will probably release them on March 30 (Hey, that's one day after my birthday!). These tablets will run on Windows 7. They should also have the best performance seen in a tablet yet; not only did Intel spend 9 months working on performance, but they will have 1.5 GHz Intel Atom Z670 processors!

Bendable Screens and Nerd Fashion right around the corner!

We've been dreaming about "computationally-inclined" clothing and flexible screens for a very long time now. IMEC has undoubtedly taken us a step closer to those dreams by creating a cheap, flexible microprocessor. Unfortunately, they're rather slow at 6 instructions per second, but, nevertheless, here we come, nerd fashion and bendable screens!

Why we don't need such fancy computers.

If the processor is faster and it's got more RAM, the computer is better, right? Well, for most people (excluding scientists, video editors, or other people that have jobs requiring powerful computer tasks), that's incorrect. For normal buisness (internet browsing/research, word processing) you don't need anything better than a Core 2 Duo or Pentium Dual-Core processor, and 2GB of RAM. It's natrual to say that I'm incorrect. However, studies have shown that 8GB of RAM really has a small difference over 4GB of RAM for normal tasks. Oh yeah, and it costs an extra 200 dollars. And unless you're a hard-core gamer, scientist, or video editor, a Core 2 Duo processor is really all you need. So then why would you get a fancy computer? The only good reason, in my opinion, is if it is a Mac. That's not because they have insane i7 processors with 16GB of RAM (which they don't, except for the Mac Pro), but because they have a better OS, better software, and better hardware. They're even virus-proof, and the Mac Mini compact desktop starts at only $699, a good deal for a Mac, while the MacBook is just $999, an incredible deal for a Mac laptop. Both of those give you what you need; a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB of RAM, and other reasonalbe specs. And though a PC's OS, software and hardware are not as well developed as a Mac's, a PC with similar specs to the Mac Mini could be found for under 500 dollars. The computer I use has a 1.9 GHz Celeron processor and 1GB of RAM, and though it is slow, it really isn't that bad.

Updated iPad 2 and iPhone 5 rumors!

An iPad 2 dummy model was just found at CES. As I have mentioned in a previous post, it will have a retina display with almost as many pixels per inch as the iPhone 4, a front and a rear camera, possibly a USB port, and a SD card slot. It should be on the market April 2nd or 9th. There have also been rumors about the iPhone 5. These have stated that it will feature a Cortex-A9 based multicore processor (which they might call the A5), which will certainly allow for smoother video and better multitasking than the current Cortex-A8 based single core processor called the A4. However, battery life could drop by up to 10% because of this change, though Apple could try making a longer lasting battery to counter this.
